Well, here is the finished painting. On the whole I am very happy that I decided to keep at it and not give up on the idea, however I am definitely ready to move on.
The concept for this piece was to continue with the idea of grief/depression existing as it’s own entity. You can read my original idea here, and see the first painting. In this second piece I wanted to show only the separate reflection of grief/depression, but so that the viewer can place themselves in the position of the person looking in the mirror, and that the image could be a picture of their own pain.

I really like this! It’s subtle enough in order to make you question, but enough hints with the finger tips and palm to allow you to figure it out. Also the wonder of what she is looking into, just a mirror or something much more.

Thanks so much for all of your feedback Ryan! It’s tough to know sometimes if you are being just subtle enough, too much or not at all!! You want the viewer to get your message but not in a “hit them over the head” kind of way. 🙂

The use of the gray blue gives that depressive quality to this. The hand reaching out to touch the reflection makes me wonder what she really sees of herself.

I’m glad that you feel the color helps give that depressing feeling, my goal was to make the skin tone realistic- but cold and sickly looking.
Thanks for all of your insight on this one Leslie!

It’s an excellent painting.
You show great skill at the two things i struggle with most in my art.
Hands and faces

Well, truth be told I struggle with them too! You don’t want to be anywhere near me when I am drawing my figures,….it’s NOT pretty! (My poor family…)
I’m glad that you like the painting, Richard. Thanks so much for visiting and commenting!
